Madrid

We're not city people, so spending a few days in Madrid is a bit of a stretch.  But we've enjoyed it tremendously.  Madrid is a very walkable city with wonderful architecture and great food.

Key attractions require tickets in advance.  We were too late to tour the Royal Palace, but we did enjoy a fascinating guided tour of the Liria Palace, which was home to the Dukes of Alba since its construction in the 1700s.  The palace is packed with art and amazing furnishings.  Incredibly, it was completely gutted by fire in 1936 and then rebuilt (most of the art had been stored elsewhere so was undamaged).  No photos were permitted inside the palace.

Wednesday evening we went to theater to see a production of Mamma Mia.  Well performed with great singing (all the songs translated into Spanish) and dancing.  The audience was very enthusiastic, often singing along.

Yesterday we visited the Prado Museum.  Our usual time limit for museums is about two hours, but there was so much we stayed twice that long before our eyes were worn out.

Rest of the time we enjoyed just walking around the city and parks, and absorbing the energy of the city.

This afternoon we fly to Athens for the next phase of our adventure.
