Travel, Lisbon, Azenhas do Mar and Arraiolos

Time for a little catching up...

Flights from Medford, Denver and Heathrow to Lisbon were all smooth.  Very glad we paid a little more for premium economy on the overnight to Heathrow.  The more spacious seating (and very generous wine pours) made a difference, and I was able to sleep most of the way.

We arrived in Lisbon late afternoon, taxied to our hotel near the airport, and walked to a nearby kebab shop for a quick meal.  In the morning we returned to the airport to pick up a car and headed a bit north to the quiet beach town of Azenhas do Mar.  We had booked a lovely room with a terrace looking over the ocean.  We spent most of the day walking north and south on paths along the ocean, and a had a great seafood dinner.

We are working our way slowly eastward to Spain.  Today we drove a couple of hours to the small town of Arraiolos: picked somewhat at random because it was the right distance and had an old castle on the hill to explore.  The castle walls (from the early 14th century) aren't much, but the town is lovely.  It is famous for rug weaving, which has been an important activity here since the 15th century.  There is a nice museum, and we spent most of the afternoon just walking around town and exploring.

Our hotel is in this 1855 house.  Filled with antiques.
